Disco's Critters Hedgehogs for adoption
About Disco's Critters Breedery:

I am a USDA licensed Small animal breeder located in Chaska, MN.
I breed for health and Temperament for Pet Quality.
I also breed Fancy rats, Fancy mice, several types of hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea pigs, African Soft Fur rats, Egyptian Spiny mice and Degus.

Hedgehog Info:

  • I breed for Pet quality.
  • I have litters available typically every few months.
  • I handle the babies minimally until about 4 weeks when they start venturing out of the nest on their own.
After the babies start exploring on their own, I start handling them often.
  • I wean the babies at between 7 and 8 weeks.
  • Hedgehogs are mainly nocturnal but will adjust to your schedule some.
Hedgehogs make the best pets for people who are up late or awake at night.
If you are a person who gets up and goes to bed early, you will rarely be able to interact with your hedgie.
Hedgehogs are most active from 9pm to 6am.
Many Hedgehogs enjoy running on their wheel for a majority of the night.
If you are a light sleeper, they may keep you awake or wake you up with the noise of their wheel.
  • Having a lamp or dimmer light in the area you are wanting to play with your hedgie, so it's not so bright, will help them feel more comfortable and willing to come out during the day.
Hedgehogs are mainly nocturnal therefore they see better in low light conditions.
  • Hedgehogs quills can be sharp and can hurt you if they poke you.
Hedgehogs quill sharpness depends on the angle of the quills which depends on their mood.
I classify the quills into 3 stages.
Quills Standing Straight up -they are very prickly and sharp. Quills Halfway standing up they are sort of prickly.
Quills Laying down are not sharp.
They do not make good pets for young children or for anyone overly sensitive to sharp prickly things.
Young children can become startled if poked and could drop the animal which could cause them serious injury.
  • Hedgehogs can be pet and played with.
  • Hedgehogs main food source is dry cat food.
When deciding on a food, Chicken should be one of the first few ingredients.
Hedgehog food is not recommended as most Hedgehogs will not eat it.
There are many dry cat food choices available.
It is best to get a food sample of the food your hedgie is used to eating when acquiring them to help them transition over easily and to prevent an upset stomach.
Many hedgies will not eat certain types of cat food, so you may have to try several before finding one they like.
I feed mine Purina Naturals and/or Purina Complete cat food.
Hedgehogs also eat bugs and/or worms. Such as Superworms & mealworms. Some people feed Dubia roaches, crickets or hornworms.
Some Hedgies enjoy scrambled eggs, garden veggies and cooked chicken.
Some hedgehogs enjoy having a small amount of Chicken based wet cat food for a snack once or twice a week.
  • Your hedgehog will enjoy having a hiding house to sleep in during the day. A plastic igloo house or ceramic house work best. Wood houses are not recommended because they can harbor mites which hedgehogs are prone to.
  • Hedgehogs also enjoy a fleece sleep sack (Much like a hedgehog sleeping bag), fleece scrap or blanket for hiding under. (Having both a blanket and house is best)
  • Hedgehogs can develop dry skin from bedding, humidity changes or mites.
Hedgehogs should be kept at 72-78 degrees.
If you notice dry skin, you can give your hedgie a bath to see if that helps. Hedgehogs enjoy baths.
You can give your hedgie a bath about every 6 weeks or so or as needed.
Some hedgies get very dirty from running on their wheels and stepping in feces.
Unscented bar soap, baby shampoo, oatmeal shampoos and dish soap can be used.
Dish soap can dry out their skin by removing too many oils so should only be used if they are very dirty.
Some people will scrub in between their quills with a toothbrush.
Dry skin could also be a sign of mites. With tropical fur mites you typically will notice small red sores on the body and ears. With sarcoptic mites you may notice quill or hair loss.
  • Hedgehogs will need nail trimmings about every month and a half.
Typically the 2 most inner nails on the back feet are the ones that grow the fastest.
The quick of the nails is usually easily seen with long nails. You do not want to clip lower than the quick or into it. That may cause the nail to bleed and be painful.
It is always better to trim just a little then too much.
There is no need to stress out your hedgehog, if trimming the nails is difficult because they have rolled into a ball or are prickling up, you can trim what you can and try again the next day.
Some hedgehogs can be stubborn and roll into a ball, if this happens running them under running water in the sink will cause them to uncurl, which may help give you access to their feet to trim the nails.
If you accidentally trim a nail to short and it starts bleeding you can apply blood stop or flour to make it clot and stop the bleeding quicker. (it is usually best to put the hedgie back in the cage to allow them to clean themselves and relax so the bleeding stops sooner.
  • All hedgehogs have different personalities, some are more active and others more laid back..
  • Hedgehogs need to be kept warm, at 72 -78 degrees. 74 degrees seems perfect for them.
Cold temperatures can make your hedgehog sick or go into hibernation, which is very dangerous.
Pet Hedgehogs don't know how to come out of hibernation and it can be extremely dangerous and can cause death.
If your house temperature is not warm enough you can use a CHE heat lamp with thermostat to regulate the temperature and keep it the desired temperature.
Heating pads or lamps underneath the cage can be dangerous or cause burns if your hedgehog falls asleep on them.
Heat lamps are much safer then heating pads.
If you choose to use a heating pad, one with a thermostat is best, place them only covering half of the cage so the hedgie is less likely to overheat.
Using a temperature controlled space heater in the room with the hedgie is an option if you have several cages and having numerous heat lamps could pose an electrical or fire risk.
  • Hedgehogs should be housed on Aspen, fleece or newspaper bedding.
Do not use Pine or Cedar they are unsafe and harmful to all animals and should never be used.
Both Pine and Cedar cause respiratory issues for humans and animals. They contain harmful phenols that can burn your lungs and/or cause scabbing and scarring on the lungs for life.
Care Fresh or Clean and Cozy bedding is very dusty and in many animals it can cause sneezing or respiratory issues.
Care Fresh and Clean and Cozy bedding have been known for causing intestinal blockages if accidentally eaten. This bedding expands when wet, the stomach acids can not break it down fast enough so it could build up and cause a blockage.
Fleece can be used as a bedding liner or as a blanket to hide under.
Fleece can trap ammonia, which inturn could cause respiratory issues if not changed frequently enough.
  • Hedgehog's lifespan is 4 to 6 yrs on average.
  • Hedgehogs do not need vaccinations or shots.
  • Hedgehogs are considered to be an Exotic pet/animal.
  • If your hedgehog needs Veterinary care, you will need to find and see an Exotic Vet.
  • All Hedgehog breeders with over 4 breeder animals are required by Federal law to be Licensed by the USDA.
Please only buy from Breeders who follow Federal laws!
Unlicensed breeders are a threat to our ownership rights.
Hedgehogs are illegal to own in some states -Please check your state's laws. (They are legal to own in Minnesota)
  • Overall Hedgehogs are fairly low maintenance pets as far as cage cleaning frequency compared to other small pocket pets.
    Hedgehogs make great Friends!
